Description
This folder primarily consists of correspondence authored by William Barnes, an entomologist who specialized in Lepidoptera, specifically butterflies. A large portion of Barnes’s correspondence are descriptions of different butterflies and moths. In 1875, Barnes started a collection of North American Lepidoptera and was aided over the course of his life by collectors and museum staff. By 1924, the collection grew to contain 6000 types, co-types, and specimens, with a million specimens labeled, and 300,000 specimens not labeled. That same year, Allen F. Moore, a U.S. representative from Illinois’s 19th district, sought the opinions of the American Entomological Society (AES) on whether the U.S. government should purchase Barnes’s collection. Included in his letter is a memorandum that provides details on the history of the collection and the proposed purchase. Also included in the memorandum are the endorsements of scientists, university officials, agriculturists, and state officers.
Another correspondent is Harry Gardner Barber or H.G. Barber, an entomologist who worked with Hemiptera and represented the New York Entomological Society as part of the Board of Editors of the New York State List of Insects. Herbert S. Barber was an entomologist who worked at the United States National Museum, known today as the Smithsonian Institution. His correspondence is focused on research surrounding the larvae of Phengodes, a genus of glowworms in the beetle family, Phengodidae, found in Arizona. Amadeu A. Barbiellini was the owner and director of O Entomologista Brasileiro, a Brazilian entomological monthly magazine, who wrote to the AES about exchanges of publications and advertisements with Entomological News. Barber, Harry Gardner (8) 1895-1908; Barber, Herbert Spencer (4) 1903-1911; Barbiellini, Amadeu Amadei (2) 1908-1909; Barnes, William (23) 1893-1924.
