Description
This folder features correspondence concerning the activities of one of the American Entomological Society’s (AES) published journals, Entomological News. The journal received shipments of insect specimens from correspondents who believed they were worth publishing about or could not identify them and required information from the AES. An example of the latter is Doris M. Armstrong who captured a specimen of angulifera but could not identify it herself and wrote to the journal for assistance. Researchers also reached out to the Entomological News for support with ongoing research of specific insects by requesting that they advertise the work being done through various forms of publications. Edward Louis Arndt, who went by E.L. Ardnt, was a professor at Concordia College who began researching Trichoptera, commonly known as caddisflies, in 1906. To support his research, he wrote to the AES requesting literature on Trichoptera and that an article be published in the journal on how to capture them as a way of generating interest.
The journal also required a subscription fee, but this policy was subject to change under special circumstances. During the Second World War, the AES leadership council implemented the policy of remitting membership dues for its members, who were serving in the military; this policy extended to the Entomological News where members could continue their subscription at a reduced rate. The AES also elected another Corresponding Member in 1938, George Arnold, who went by G. Arnold and served as the Director of the National Museum of Southern Rhodesia.
