Columbia Bridge, Philadelphia, Philadelphia & Reading Railway, 1921

Glass lantern slide of a black and white photograph of the Columbia Railroad Bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The photograph is taken from the west bank of the river looking north. The full span of the bridge is visible. At the right, a car is seen passing under the first arch on Kelly Drive and another bridge is faintly visible through the second arch. The Columbia Railroad Bridge is a concrete arch bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia consisting of eight concrete arch spans supporting four railroad tracks and a pedestrian walk. It was designed by Samuel Tobias Wagner who was chief engineer of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway at the time and is the third railroad bridge at this location. It opened in 1920 with two tracks, and the other two were added in 1921. Used to illustrate the course "Civil Engineering Structures" which was taught between 1893-1950 at the Wagner Free Institute of Science, Philadelphia, Pa.
