Description
This folder consists primarily of correspondence detailing exchanges of insect specimens, publications, and literature between the American Entomological Society (AES) and various individuals. Lepidoptera is the most frequently discussed order of insects throughout the folder; notable examples being the family, Hesperiidae, and the genus, Argynnis. One correspondent, Charles S. Anderson, had an unknown butterfly of the Argynnis genus named after him after sending it to the AES for study. The exchange of Lepidoptera specimens extended beyond the United States. The AES received shipments of specimens from Pará, Brazil, and a proposal from a Danish entomologist to establish a formal partnership between the AES and the Danish Lepidopterological Society.
Outside of Lepidoptera, Tipulidae, commonly known as crane flies, are mentioned within correspondence belonging to Charles P. Alexander, who specialized in studying Tipulidae. The AES and Alexander conducted multiple exchanges of Tipulidae specimens and literature throughout the 1910s. In addition to the United States, he wrote multiple papers on different countries’ crane flies in the Americas and as far as Japan. Charles P. Alexander was made a Corresponding Member of the AES in 1938.
