Description
Ernest L. Bell was an insect collector, who made many exchanges with the American Entomological Society (AES). His correspondence indicates that his collection was largely made up of insects in the Lepidoptera order, specifically butterflies of the Hesperiidae family. Many of his specimens were collected across the United States, including but not limited to Arizona, Arkansas, and Missouri. Bell also received specimens from Ecuador and Japan.
In 1922, Bell discovered a new butterfly during a trip to Tampa, Florida in 1921. He would go on to name this butterfly, Thorybes confusis. The first half of his correspondence details the development of his description of Thorybes confusis, and the process he underwent to have his description published via the Journal of the New York Entomological Society and Entomological News of the AES.
