Description
This folder primarily contains correspondence from Julia P. Ballard, Henry A. Ballou, and Esteram Balint.
Julia P. Ballard was an author who wrote several children’s books on entomology. In addition to her literary works, Ballard photographed many insects and mailed these photographs to the AES’s journal, Entomological News. In an 1891 letter to the Entomological News, Ballard requested that she be properly credited for several photographs of butterflies and moths that she took. She names the insects and specific publications that feature her photographs in her correspondence, with one example being a royal walnut moth featured on page 233 of a publication named, “Moths + Butterflies.”
Henry A. Ballou was an entomologist who worked for the Imperial Department of Agriculture in the West Indies. In his correspondence, Ballou describes several specimens he collected or photographed in Barbados. In a letter written in 1906, he mailed a photograph of what was possibly the species, Atractocerus brasiliensis, commonly known as Ship-Timber Beetles to the American Entomological Society (AES). In that same year, Ballou also mailed a package of four specimens of what he believed to be were tiger beetles to the AES.
Esteram Balint was an entomologist based in Brazil, and his only correspondence is a letter sent to the AES, detailing a possible exchange of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera that originated from the Amazonian region. The letter is written in French, with English translations located at the bottom of the page or next to the original text. Ballard, Julia P. (Julia Perkins) (1) 1891; Ballou, Charles H.
