Description
This folder consists of letters written to the American Entomological Society (AES) on various topics. Thomas Beveridge Ashton, who went by T.B. Ashton, was an entomologist and one of three surviving original members of the American Entomological Society in 1893. Ashton’s letters in the folder were written in the final years of his life, and they provide details on manuscripts and papers he sent to the Entomological News for publication. In one letter, he discussed the possibility of Entomological News publishing an article he wrote discussing the early history of the AES alongside E.T. Cresson and Henry Ulke.
Ernest Adna Back or E.A. Back was an entomologist who investigated the threat of Whiteflies towards agriculture in Florida as a member of the United States Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Entomology. Outside of his work with the Bureau of Entomology, Back extensively researched Asilidae, commonly known as robber flies, with help from the AES in the form of exchanging insect specimens and literature.
The rest of the correspondence varies in subject with one written by Amory L. Babcock to the AES in 1894 that detailed a possible, large exchange of different species of lepidoptera. Ernest E. Austen, an English entomologist, was elected a Corresponding Member of the AES in 1911. Ashton, Thomas Beveridge (5) 1891-1894; Atwood, W.P. (2) 1896; Austen, E. E.
