Description
This folder includes primarily correspondence from Otis W. Barrett and J. Percy Baumberger. Barret was an entomologist, who worked for the Museum of Geographic Exploration in Tacubaya, which is now a subdivision of modern-day Mexico City. Barret collected a variety of insects, including but not limited to several species of Hesperiidae, commonly known as skippers. In 1899, Barret wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper, detailing his concerns about an article that was published the day before. The article in question was about an individual, J.H. McClymonds, claiming to have developed an experimental spray that could eradicate orange navel worms, which were destroying citrus crops in the area. Barret criticized both the article and McClymonds’s spray as misleading and did not understand the biology of the orange navel worm, and he urged the editor to correct the false impressions in the previous article.
J. Percy Baumberger was an entomologist who worked with several insect orders. Much of his correspondence concerns various exchanges of Hymenoptera and Diptera he made with E.T. Cresson, Jr. In his correspondence is an extensive list of genera and species in the Phyllophaga – Tenthredinidae family. Barnett, Claribel Ruth (1) 1936; Barrett, O. W.
