Description
This folder contains correspondence from multiple individuals. The correspondence of William Thompson Davis discusses the many exchanges of specimens between the American Entomological Society (AES) and himself. In 1880, he sent two boxes of Mutillidae, commonly known as Velvet ants, to the AES. He also sent several specimens of Hymenoptera and Odonata to the AES. Between 1915-1922, the AES loaned several groups of Cicadas to Davis for study.
Charles Clemon Deam's correspondence discusses his botanical trip to Guatemala during the previous winter of 1905. During his trip, he collected both butterflies and Diptera, which he offered to trade with the AES for papered Coleoptera.
J.A. Dew's correspondence contains two papers about the fall army worm or grass worm, which is named Laphygma frugiperda in both papers. In April 1913, Dew mailed both papers to the AES journal, Entomological News, for publication, but one of them was struck from the journal in December 1913. It was found that the paper was already published by a different journal, and Philip P. Calvert deemed it unnecessary and unfair to other contributors, who were still waiting for their papers to be published. Davis, John (4) 1893-1895; Davis, John J.
