Description
This folder holds correspondence from three individuals. Carl Braun was a naturalist whose correspondence with Henry Skinner discussed descriptions of the larvae and pupae of Noctuidae and Lepidoptera. Braun also proposed to Skinner that he would give the specimens to him for $1 each.
Herman H. Brehme or H.H. Brehme was a dealer in insects and entomological supplies, who served as the president of the New Jersey Entomological Company. Several of his correspondence discuss the status of shipments sent to the American Entomological Society (AES). Some shipments were of insect specimens including but not limited to wasps, moths, and dragonflies. In 1918, his home and collection of insects were destroyed in a storm, with damage amounting to over $4000 at the time. Brehme subsequently wrote to the AES for assistance in connecting him to other entomologists, who could provide him with specimens and materials to rebuild his collection.
E. Brendel’s correspondence mentions several papers and monographs that were sent to Entomological News for publication. The correspondence titled, “Genera and Species”, serves as an explanation of his views on how “genus and species-making" should be conducted.
Braun, Carl (2) 1891; Brehme, Herman H. (31) 1904-1925; Brendel, E. (2) 1890.
