Description
This folder holds correspondence from the Bureau of Entomology, Hangchow, Chekiang, China located in present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. Spanning from 1934 to 1937, the correspondence provides details on exchanges of publications between the Bureau and the American Entomological Society’s (AES) journal, Entomological News. The Bureau attempted to send their yearbook to the AES, which began in 1935.
The correspondence of H.K. Burrison contains two lists of potential sales of butterflies and Lepidoptera. Burrison owned a variety of Lepidoptera that were collected throughout the United States and abroad. In 1895, he wrote to the AES to negotiate the purchase of butterflies he did not already have in his collection, such as Persiama. His other list is of Lepidoptera for sale from Malabar Coast, India.
August Busck was an entomologist in the Department of Entomology at the United States National Museum, known today as the Smithsonian Institution. His correspondence largely discusses his work with microlepidoptera, particularly those collected by James Brackenridge Clemens. Busck made several visits to the AES to view the Clemens collection of microlepidoptera and commented on the naming and description of several insects.
