Description
The two folders contain correspondence from and directed to Theodore D.A. Cockerell, who specialized in Hymenoptera. His correspondence, spanning from 1891-1942, contains exchange receipts and lists of bee specimens that were sent to and received from the American Entomological Society (AES). Cockerell also worked with Lepidoptera, particularly butterflies, and he wrote several publications and descriptions that were sent to the AES. Much of his correspondence is directed to Henry Skinner, and the two men exchanged feedback and comments on each other’s research on Lepidoptera. Skinner also provided Cockerell with assistance in obtaining and exchanging Hymenoptera specimens with the AES.
Cockerell served as curator of the Institute of Jamaica, beginning in 1891 but submitted his resignation in 1893 due to health concerns. He also worked at the New Mexico College of Agriculture as professor of entomology and the New Mexico Agriculture Experiment Station as station entomologist.
